About this product

The Elcometer 138 Conductivity Meter (E138-CM) measures the conductivity of a solution from a single drop of sample. Conductivity is a direct indicator of dissolved salt concentration, so the meter supports decisions on surface cleanliness and water quality, where excess soluble salts drive premature corrosion and coating failure. A sample can either be placed on the meter's flat sensor or the sensor can be immersed directly into the solution under test.

The Elcometer 138 Conductivity Meter uses a 2 electrode bipolar AC measurement principle and needs a minimum sample volume of 0.12ml. Automatic range switching gives a wide measurement range from 0 to 19.99mS/cm, with a resolution of 1μS/cm up to 1999μS/cm and 0.01mS/cm from 2.00 to 19.99mS/cm, at an accuracy of ±2% of full scale. It also reports temperature. Out of range and low battery alarms are provided, along with a visual indication when ambient temperature is outside the operating range of 5°C to 40°C.

Powered by two CR2032 lithium batteries for approximately 200 hours of continuous use without backlight, the Elcometer 138 Conductivity Meter weighs 50g including sensor and batteries and measures 164 x 29 x 20mm. It can be used in accordance with ISO 8502-6, ISO 8502-9, US Navy PPI 63101-000 (Rev 27), ISO 8502-11, AS3894.6A and SSPC Guide 15. Applications include soluble salt concentration, the electric conductivity of agricultural solutions and rainwater pollution levels. Supplied by BAMR, South Africa's authorised distributor.

When to use the Elcometer 138 Conductivity Meter

Reach for the Elcometer 138 when you need the conductivity of a solution, such as a soluble salt extract taken before coating a steel surface. Its flat sensor reads from a single drop, so you are not held up collecting a large sample. The reading helps you decide whether the surface is clean enough to paint or needs further washing.

  • 1
    Reads from a single drop
The flat sensor works on a minimum sample volume of 0.12ml, so an inspector can test in the field without collecting a large solution volume.
  • 2
One range for clean and contaminated samples
Automatic range switching covers 1 microsiemens/cm up to 19.99mS/cm, so the same instrument reads both a very clean extract and a heavily contaminated one without changing setup.
  • 3
    Backed by salt-detection standards
It conforms to ISO 8502-6, 8502-9 and 8502-11 plus SSPC Guide 15, so the conductivity figure stands up in a coating inspection report.

Frequently asked questions

What measurement principle does the Elcometer 138 Conductivity Meter use?

The Elcometer 138 uses a 2-electrode bipolar AC measurement principle. It measures both conductivity and temperature, and requires a minimum sample volume of only 0.12ml.

What is the measurement range and resolution of the Elcometer 138?

Range is 0 to 19.99mS/cm. Resolution is 1µS/cm from 0 to 1999µS/cm and 0.01mS/cm from 2.00 to 19.99mS/cm. Accuracy is plus or minus 2% of full scale for each range.

How long does the battery last in the Elcometer 138 Conductivity Meter?

The Elcometer 138 runs on two CR2032 lithium batteries and provides approximately 200 hours of continuous use without the backlight. The meter weighs 50g including sensor and batteries.

Can the Elcometer 138 measure from a very small sample?

Yes. The flat sensor design allows the meter to measure conductivity from a single drop, with a minimum sample volume of 0.12ml, making it practical for field use with Bresle patch extracts.
