About this product

The 8889 Digital Mini Gun Infrared Thermometer is a compact non-contact thermometer that reads surface temperature from -40 to 500 degrees C using a built-in laser to aim at the target. Non-contact measurement is valuable where touching the surface is impractical or unsafe, such as hot asphalt, moving machinery or food, and the gun's small size lets it reach into tight places that a larger instrument cannot.

The 8889 Digital Mini Gun Infra Red Thermometer takes readings by pointing the laser pointer at the object and uses a distance to spot ratio of 10:1, so it stays accurate on more distant targets, with a quick response time of 500 ms. The built-in 670 nm laser complies with FDA Class II. Resolution is 0.1 degrees C and repeatability is plus or minus 1 degree C. Accuracy is plus or minus 2% or 2 degrees C, whichever is greater, between -20 and 200 degrees C, and plus or minus 3% or 3 degrees C at other temperatures. Emissivity is selectable across three points for simple setup.

The 8889 is operated one-handed with an ergonomic grip and a backlit display, measures 44 x 40 x 170 mm, weighs around 140 g and runs on a single 9V battery. It is used for food preparation, safety and fire inspection, plastics moulding, asphalt, marine and screen printing, ink and dryer temperature checks, and diesel and fleet maintenance. It is supplied by BAMR, South Africa's authorised distributor of precision measurement and inspection instruments.

When to use the 8889 Infrared Thermometer

Reach for the 8889 when you need a quick non-contact temperature reading on a hot, moving or awkward target and want to work one-handed in tight spaces. Laser targeting and a 10:1 distance to spot ratio let you read surfaces from -40 to 500 degrees C without touching them, across food, fire safety, plastics moulding, asphalt, marine and fleet maintenance checks.

  • 1
    Reads without contact
Non-contact measurement lets you take a temperature on moving, hot or live surfaces where a probe cannot safely go, with a 500ms response so the reading keeps up with the work.
  • 2
    10:1 distance to spot
The distance to spot ratio means you can stand back from a hot or hard-to-reach target and still measure a defined area rather than a vague average of the surroundings.
  • 3
    Compact, one-hand operation
At 44 x 40 x 170mm with an ergonomic grip, it reaches into tight places and is run one-handed while your other hand holds or steadies the work.
  • 4
    Selectable emissivity
Three-point emissivity selection lets you match the meter to the surface being read, which keeps readings honest across different materials and finishes.

Frequently asked questions

What temperature range does the 8889 cover?

The 8889 measures from minus 40 degrees C to plus 500 degrees C.

What is the distance-to-spot ratio, and what does it mean in practice?

The distance-to-spot ratio is 10:1, meaning the measured spot area is one-tenth of the distance to the target. This allows accurate readings on distant targets without contact.

What accuracy can be expected across the temperature range?

From minus 20 to plus 200 degrees C, accuracy is plus or minus 2% or 2 degrees C, whichever is greater. At other temperatures, accuracy is plus or minus 3% or 3 degrees C, whichever is greater.

Does the 8889 have adjustable emissivity?

Yes. Emissivity is 3-point selectable rather than fixed.
